Perry is the child of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first appearance was in television shows in the role of Jackie Harris, a character that was played by her mother on Roseanne, an ABC comedy Roseanne. She did not consider a career in acting until after she had reached adulthood because her parents were concerned about the adverse impact stress might be a cause of. Perry states that she did not want to be an actor in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry was able to land tiny TV roles on Law & Order: Criminal Intent following her graduation. Homesickness, however, caused her to move back to California and she returned working on stage. Perry performed with her mom on stage in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. Perry was in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie, along with Kevin McKidd. This was performed in the West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry played a part in nine episodes of ABC's thriller The Family during 2016. Her father played her character in The ABC drama Scandal. She played the younger Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) in Young Sheldon. This spin-off episode of CBS's The Big Bang Theory was another younger portrayal of her mother. The character was chosen via auditions having a strong relationship with the show.
